Program Assistant- Student Success Mentor

8 hours per day/188 days to work

 

Position Purpose:

We believe that every student can graduate and that every student needs at least a little bit of help.  Our mission is to provide students and families with a partner who already knows how Grants Pass High School works.  The 9th Grade Student Success mentor helps students adapt to the school environment and guides them in making appropriate social, academic, and behavioral choices. 

 

Responsibilities/Duties:

Essential Duties/Skills

  • General duties:
    • Assist in monitoring student academic success
    • Work with students to meet their educational needs by using appropriate strategies, methods, materials, and/or equipment
    • Perform clerical duties as needed
    • Excellent written and oral communication skills (both in person and over the phone)
    • Accurate typing skills.  Must be able to use word processing programs on a computer and have familiarity with Google Drive.
    • Effectively work and communicate with students, parents, and school personnel from diverse cultures or backgrounds
    • Work harmoniously with others.
    • Participate and maintain District provided training.
    • Cultivate and model a respectful working and learning environment.
    • Handle sensitive situations on the telephone and in person on a regular basis.
    • Be flexible, work under time constraints, and work both independently and collaboratively. 
  • Provide student supports:
    • 1:1 attention, support, communication and relationship building
    • Direct communication regarding expectations, attendance, and conduct
    • Problem solving and planning for success
    • Small group work during the day
    • Parent engagement and involvement
    • Help get student connected with supports and school activities
  • Assist in academic efforts
    • Work with 9th Grade Success Coordinator to identify students in need of intervention
    • Provide direct interventions in accordance with the tiered system of support
    • Appropriate documentation and reporting of related efforts such as attendance and behavior
    • Communicate student needs with staff and appropriate outside agencies
  • Active involvement with 9th grade teacher team
    • Provide insight to 9th grade teachers
    • Attend classes to gain insights on content and support students during class
    • Collaborate with counselors for any referral needs
  • Provide Parent Supports:
    • 1:1 attention, support, communication and relationship building
    • Home visits as needed
    • Parent engagement and partnership
    • Problem solving and planning for success
  • Participate in parent, teacher, and student conferences as requested and initiate such conferences as needed
  • Assist students in improving their communication skills when needed
  • Attend staff meetings and serve on committees as requested
  • Perform such other tasks and assume such other responsibilities as may be assigned from time to time
  • Consult with teachers, parents, other personnel and or/outside professionals for the purpose of providing requested information, developing plans for service and/or making recommendations
  • Facilitate communication between students and or parents with teachers and/or other personnel for the purpose of evaluating situations, solving problems, and/or resolving conflicts
  • Initiate and participate in various meetings (e.g. parent conferences, in service trainings, student screen, site meetings, etc) for the purpose of receiving and/or providing information and or meeting credential requirements
  • Collaborate with other Success Mentors
  • Participate in summer programs: Summer Bridge and home visits for incoming 9th graders

 

Essential Physical Requirements:

Light to moderate degree of physical stamina, with occasional lifting of up to 50 pounds.  Ability to move freely around the office and school, making frequent trips around campus.  Ability to sit for prolonged periods of time, as well as frequent standing, walking, and bending.  Exposure to noise and activity in a school setting.

           

QUALIFICATIONS:

  1. Equivalent to completion of the twelfth grade and one of the following three options:
    • Two years of college study.
    • An associate’s or higher degree.
    • A passing score on the District reading, writing and math assessment.
  2. Under the supervision of licensed staff, provide support to students through various mentoring activities.
  3. Be effective at building relationships with students and work collaboratively with families, teachers, and other adults and/or organizations to support students.
  4. Be flexible and have the ability to adapt to changing daily schedule while helping provide student support.
  5. Have strong communication skills both verbal and written.
  6. Have strong organizational skills, ability to manage and track mentor roles and responsibilities.
  7. Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.
  8. Knowledge of and experience with computers and the student information system.
  9. Ability to establish and maintain cooperative relationships with fellow employees and ability to get along well with students.
  10. Cultivate and model a respectful working and learning environment.
  11. Bilingual and biliterate in Spanish preferred.
  • Upon selection, employees will be required to pay for the following: $12.50 fingerprinting fee and $66 ODE fingerprinting processing fee.

 

 

STARTING SALARY RANGE:  $16.15-$23.33 per hour. Dependent on experience/education.
